1904 USA $20 Gold Coin, Choice Uncirculated, Liberty Head Design
The $20 double eagle coin traces its beginnings to the California Gold Rush of the late 1840s, when the U.S. Treasury was receiving a large amount of gold from the mines. In response, Congress authorized the $20 face value gold coins. The Liberty Head double eagle went on to become one the most popular coins in terms of currency in the United States through till 1907 when the new Saint-Gaudens design replaced it. Designed by James Longacre, the obverse features a profile of Lady Liberty wearing an elaborate coronet, while the reverse features an eagle with a motto ribobon on each side.
In 1933, most large groups of U.S. gold coins were redeemed for banknotes and then melted down by the US Treasury Department when Franklin D. Roosevelt signed an executive order largely prohibiting the private ownership of gold. Most private gold ownership remained illegal in the United States until 1974.
