Product Overview
This is a near-perfect superb gem uncirculated example of Canada's 1944 victory war issue nickel. It's one of the best surviving examples and has been independently third-party certified as Mint State 66 by the International Coin Certification Service, Canada's most respected and trusted grading service. Only a very small percentage of coins from this era have survived in this exceptional condition, making it both visually appealing and extremely rare for collectors to acquire.
Unlike coins made especially for collectors, business-strike coins like this were normally poured into and out of tote bins by the mint, bulk weighed, counted and then shipped loose to the banks in canvas bags holding $300 face value's worth of coins (about 6,000 coins). These coins would then bang against each other and cause many surface marks while in transit. A coin graded Gem Uncirculated 66 will have only minimal marks, a sharp strike and exceptional mint lustre, and will be far more attractive than a typical example from the same year. After 80 years since first issued, only about one in every 50,000 coins originally issued has survived in this exceptional grade.
The coin comes protected and security sealed in standard ICCS certification holder, including the assigned grade of MS-66 and a unique certification number. The design features a large "V" standing both for victory and the Roman numeral five, plus an international code message around the rim that means, "We Win When We Work Willingly." The obverse design features the effigy of King George VI.
