1988 $5 Platinum 1/10-Ounce Maple Leaf Coin (first year of issue, RCM sealed)
This 1988 $5 pure platinum coin dates from the first year ever issued by the Royal Canadian Mint. This first issue is highly collectible when still in perfect condition and is rarely available to collectors today. This coin is absolutely pristine and comes still sealed in the original RCM clear packaging.
The Canadian platinum maple leaf was introduced by the Royal Canadian Mint in 1988 where it debuted alongside the silver maple leaf. The effigy of Queen Elizabeth II by Arnold Machin was introduced back in 1965 and shows Her Majesty at age 39. The main design presents the classic sugar maple leaf originally created by Walter Ott in 1979 for Canada's first gold maple leaf coin.
