2010 $10 Proof Pure Silver Coin Battleship Marat
This large two-ounce fine silver $10 proof coin features a diamond shape with an image of the imposing Soviet battleship Marat. This ship is both a marvel of technology and a part of the important story of the Second World War. In addition to its exceptional engraving and artistic appeal, this coin provides a fascinating tangible link to history for World War II enthusiasts, naval historians and coin collectors. The coin is additionally enhanced with an element of gold plating at the top showing the country of origin of the ship.
Marat, originally named Petropawlowsk, was the third of four new dreadnoughts for the Imperial Russian Navy launched in 1911. Rather than going into direct battle during World War I, the Marat played a defensive role and was used for training and other operations. It wasn't until 1919 during her defence at Kronstadt that she was hit by British forces. However, that did not put an end to her service. Following the Kronstadt Rebellion of 1921, she was renamed Marat after the French revolutionary Jean-Paul Marat and went through a partial reconstruction in 1928.
About the Marat
In 1941, her bow was blown off and she sank in the harbour of Kronstadt. She was later raised and used as a floating battery. There were plans to reconstruct her after the war but that was cancelled in 1948. After resuming her original name in 1943, she was renamed Volkhov in 1950 after the nearby river and subsequently scrapped in 1953.
