2011 $10 Proof Pure Silver Coin Battleship Vittorio Veneto

This large two-ounce fine silver $10 proof coin features a diamond shape with an image of the imposing Italian battleship Vittorio Veneto. This ship is both a marvel of technology and a part of the important story of the Second World War. Launched in July 1937, this battleship was named after the Italian naval victory in 1918 during World War I, over Austria-Hungary at Vittorio Veneto. This battle contributed to the end of the Great War. The RN Vittorio Veneto was 237 metres long with a 33-metre beam, and had a displacement of over 44,000 tons. She was a steam-powered ship, with a top speed of 30 knots.

About Vittorio Veneto
During World War II the Vittorio Veneto was first deployed in 1940, in the Battle of Cape Spartivento, and later in the Battle of Cap Matapan. Although damaged by torpedoes, the Vittorio Veneto managed to escape and make a safe return to Italy. In 1943, the ship was surrendered to the Allies following the Italian surrender, to be interned under British control in Egypt. Following the end of the war she was offered as reparation payment to the British, and subsequently broken up for scrap.
