Creams and ointments treat the symptoms of itching and insect bites, not the cause. They are usually made up of hydrocortisone - which is a topical steroid that generally reduces inflammation and has no specificity for insect bites. Some are also calamine based, which is a combination of zinc oxide and iron, which in theory dries out insect bites and prevents weeping and excessive itchiness.
