Estate Originals 14K White Gold 1.65 Carat Ammolite Triplet and Diamond Ring

This contemporary fashion-forward ring is crafted in 14K white gold and presents a Euro shank square bottom that sweeps up in a gentle curve to house an angled, bezel-set, 1.65-carat oval cabochon-cut ammolite triplet. The opposite side extends upward to encircle a 0.11-carat round, brilliant-cut diamond, leaving a significant opening between the two. The use of negative space serves to emphasize both the ammolite and the diamond while revealing some of the finger in between. A signature small diamond is located at the base of the shank, to one side, providing a designer appeal.

Ammolite is a gem that comes from the fossilized shell of an extinct, squid-like creature called an ammonite; these fossils are found in Canada. Ammolite's iridescent play of colour is what makes it so distinctive and attractive. Its iridescence occurs when the fossilized ammonite shell becomes mineralized. Unlike most gems, whose colours come from light absorption, ammolite's iridescent colour is caused by interference with the light that gets trapped within stacked layers of thin platelets that make up the fossilized shell. Since the layer of ammolite is typically thin, most ammolite is made into doublets or triplets for use in jewellery. Triplets are typically assembled by placing a thin slice of shell between two layers of more durable material that are attached with epoxy. While shades of green and red are usually seen, all spectral colours are possible.
