Estate Originals 18K Yellow Gold Antique Emerald and Diamond Ring
This beautiful and sparkling Victorian (1860 - 1901) jewel features a 1.16 carat vibrant Kelly green emerald, accented with eight lively old European cut diamonds, and arranged in a navette shaped cluster. The geometrically ornamented top features a black enamel 'X' shaped separator that angularly divides the top and bottom three old European cut diamonds from those on the east and west sides. Each diamond is nestled into a curved support that hugs the top portion, while the buttercup setting scalloped prongs are arranged around each bottom portion, and a pierced honeycomb design fills out the undergallery. The fancy shoulders are adorned with a pierced dome design detailed with milgrain, engraving and black enamel, some of which is worn with time. This captivating confection of colour and sparkle is elegantly hand fabricated in 18K yellow gold. The total diamond weight is 1.10 carats.
Jewellery from the Victorian Era is characterized by its ornate and feminine designs, intricate craftsmanship and symbolic significance. Jewels bloomed with colourful gems: amethysts, chrysoberyl, emeralds, garnets, topaz and turquoise to name but a few. During this era, jewellery transcended its role as mere decoration to become a means of personal expression and social commentary. The designs often featured motifs from nature, such as flowers, birds, and serpents, symbolizing love, wisdom, and eternity. The Early and Middle Victorian periods coincided with the beginning years of Queen Victoria's reign. Commonly used materials included gold, as it became more accessible due to new source discoveries. The Victorians used black enamel on both mourning jewellery and everyday pieces for a gothic flair.
