Estate Originals 18K Yellow Gold "Cavelti{ Morganite and Diamond Brutalist Ring
This wonderful work of wearable art is signed "Cavelti" and designed in the highly distinctive aesthetic of the short-lived Brutalist style of the 1950s to 1960s. This ring, with its intense texture and naturalistic coral reef design, is crafted in 18K yellow gold, and an array of bead-topped pillars of various heights, resembling tentacles, stem from a deep base to enwrap around a 2.80-carat oval morganite. Six round, brilliant-cut diamonds are positioned with one at the top, one at the bottom and two on each side creating a strikingly stunning statement on the finger. The diamonds add a touch of brilliance, contrasting against the rough-hewn gold and enhancing the overall dramatic effect. The split shank serves to compliment the organic structure of the design. The six diamonds combine for 0.42 carats.
Brutalism originally began as an architectural style in the 1950s. Brutalist jewellery pieces from that era often times had an almost handmade look with bumpy, knobby or rough textures as well as repeated geometric forms that were asymmetric and abstract. It is a style with an emphasis on materials, textures and construction that produced highly expressive forms. The brutalist era was defined by big looks and redefined by the use of a more natural approach to setting using flowed gold and nugget-esque looks. Brutalist-style jewellery tends to be edgy and bold and often has a chunky or heavy look with a distinctive mixture of shapes, textures and dimensions.
Toni Cavelti is a world-renowned master craftsman and artist. Swiss-born, Cavelti opened his first jewellery design and retail operation in Vancouver over 50 years ago. His spectacular jewellery has received international acclaim, from a necklace designed for Queen Elizabeth to four Diamonds International Awards. A signature designer for Birks, Cavelti continued to inspire contemporary designs that are coveted across the country and around the world. In the 1960s and 1970s, he combined nature and geometry in vibrant, bold and joyful designs. The combination of space, reflection, texture and polish create highlights and depth of form. Cavelti’s work is widely recognized as innovative, carefully considered, and expertly made, and the jewels have a balance and form that is immediately appealing to the eye.
