Estate Originals 18K Yellow Gold Ruby and Diamond Snake Ring
Artfully sculpted in gleaming 18K yellow gold, this radiant reptile wraps around the finger in a bypass formation. The mouth is slightly open, revealing the cloven-tongue and the realistically rendered eyes boast two 0.12 carat marquise-shaped rubies. The head, neck and tail are aglitter with twelve round, brilliant-cut diamonds that combine for 0.27 carats.
The snake as a motif in jewellery dates to ancient times. It is believed that the first examples were created by the Egyptians and Mesopotamians. The snake was often seen as a symbol of wisdom, healing and transformation. In addition, it was thought to be a powerful protector against evil forces. Prince Albert presented Queen Victoria with an 18K serpent engagement ring in 1840. The head was adorned with rubies for the eyes, diamonds for the mouth and an emerald set in the head, representing her birthstone. The serpent was a symbol for everlasting love and was a particularly popular expression of adoration during these times.
