Estate Originals 18K Yellow Gold Ruby and Old European Cut Diamond 5-Across Ring
This vintage 5-across ring is crafted in 18K yellow gold and features three round shaped rubies and two Old European cut diamonds presented in an alternating style. A swirl pierced undergallery is a nice illustration of the craftsmanship of years gone by. The two diamonds combine for 0.23 carats and the three rubies, 1.38 carats.
Old European cut diamonds have a round faceted shape and were the precursor to today's modern round brilliant. The biggest visual difference between an old European cut and the modern round brilliant is that the old cut favours dispersion or "fire," the multi-coloured flashes of light from within the stone. Cut by hand, they have an open culet and, instead of coming to a point at the bottom, are faceted with the smallest portion of the point cut off and often have a chunkier pattern of light, making each diamond unique. While diamonds with modern cuts are numerous, antique styles such as the old European cut are more difficult to find. Because there is a limited quantity they are a valuable commodity especially for connoisseurs who prefer the warm depth of older cuts.
