Estate Originals Platinum 1.75-Carat Marquise-Cut Diamond Ring with Baguette and Round, Brilliant-Cut Shoulders
A beautifully shaped, icy-white marquise diamond, weighing 1.75 carats, shines exuberantly between three tapered bright-white baguette-cut accent diamonds atop a sleek platinum mounting. The baguette shoulders taper and are capped on each side—first by a row of two round, brilliant-cut diamonds and then by a second row containing one diamond situated within a shield-shaped plaque. The total diamond weight is 1.98 carats.
Legend has it that Louis XV (1710–1774) encountered Jean Antoinette Poisson at a masked ball in Versailles. He was so smitten by her that he made her his chief mistress with a key place in his court as the Marquise de Pompadour (also known as Madame de Pompadour). He declared that hers were the most perfect lips he had ever seen. When the king commissioned a royal jeweller to create a design and shape of diamond that looked most like her lips, the marquise cut was born.
