This piece is completely hand crafted by a single artist located in Torro del Grecco Italy using the ancient Italian artform of Intarsia. It involves hand carving a negative image into volcanic rock found near Pompeii and then creating polymers from ground up opaque stones to create the colour which is applied. The artform dates back to pre-Roman times with examples seen in the Vatican, museums of Italy.
