The company’s history Thermos was the pioneer in the development and commercialization of domestic products using vacuum insulation technology. The idea was born in 1903 in Germany from the minds of Reinhold Burger and Albert Aschenbrenner, manufacturers of scientific glass devices. Together, they crafted a domestic vacuum flask with a protective metal casing that would be called Thermos a year later. The name is derived from Thérmē, a Greek word meaning heat, and was chosen during a competition they hosted with local residents. In 1906, an American businessman, William B Walker, met Burger and his “Thermos” brand bottle while visiting Berlin. Walker saw a potential market for the product and strategically made plans to import, obtain patent rights, and manufacture in the United States. The American Thermos Bottle Company was founded in January 1907 in Portland, Maine, and a factory was leased in Brooklyn, NY. Machines and German glassblowers were imported under Reinhold Burger's supervision to train workers in proper manufacturing techniques. The first machine-made glass filler was produced by Thermos Limited in England, a critical industrial breakthrough for accelerating production. By automating this glass blowing process, Thermos has become a world leader in glass vacuum technology and manufacturing. To meet the high demand, the company began expanding by building new factories, partnerships, and other companies' acquisitions. In 1955, Thermos Bottle Co. changed the name to The American Thermos Products Company after gaining control of Hemp and Company, Inc. of Illinois. From then on, the company introduced new products and brands in its collection and won a prominent place in the sector globally.
