The Waterford Story
Established in 1783, Waterford Crystal was instantly recognized for the clarity and purity of colour on its pieces. The company’s founders, the brothers George and William Penrose, were committed to creating the finest quality crystal for drinking vessels and beautiful objects for the home. However, in 1853, the Penrose brothers' factory faced a difficult time and was unfortunately forced to close.
After 94 years of dormancy, glassmaker Kael Bacik hired Miroslav Havel as chief designer for his fledgling glass-making company in Ireland. At the National Museum of Ireland, Havel studied the surviving samples of the Penrose brothers’ crystal from the 18th and 19th centuries. The unique cutting patterns made by the artisans of Waterford became the inspiration for the new company's product range. From these designs, Havel created in 1952 the iconic Lismore - the world’s best-selling and famous crystal pattern.
The Penrose brothers' reputation for creating a luxury crystal of unsurpassed beauty and quality has transcended the centuries to this day. The most intricate, pristine crystal continues to come to life in the House of Waterford Crystal, at the heart of the Viking Triangle. With imagination and artistic vision, designers modernize Waterford's classic patterns to today's consumers' contemporary tastes.
