Scarce Experimental 1985 Hard Pack Proof-like Coin Set

This set features mirror finish proof-like quality coins dated from 1985, including the voyageur dollar coin, half dollar, quarter, dime, nickel and cent, all in a scarce experimental “hard pack” presentation.

From 1962 to the present, the Royal Canadian Mint has sold Proof-like or Numismatic Uncirculated coin sets each year in a thin pliofilm package. However, in 1985 they experimented with changing to a more rigid “hard pack” packaging, and they released a small number of these sets to test the material and gauge the collector response.  Estimates are that about one percent of the mintage was issued in the experimental packaging. While the mint ultimately decided not to adopt the new packaging option, some of these scarce experimental 1985 hard pack proof-like sets survive to tell the story.
