Scarce Low-Mintage 1947 Maple Leaf Silver Dollar, ICCS Graded Uncirculated MS-62

This scarce-date low mintage 1947 Maple Leaf variety Canadian silver dollar is a rare coin that has survived in Uncirculated condition. It has been authenticated and graded as MS-62 by the International Coin Certification Service (ICCS) and comes protected in a tamper-proof holder. The coin is primarily brilliant and lustrous, and is also designated as having a cameo contrast.

As an Uncirculated coin designated at MS-62, it is in new condition as struck with average "bag marks," which are typical from coins coming in contact with each other in the production process and in shipping to the banking system in bulk canvas bags.

The 1947 silver dollar with a maple leaf after the date is a rare variety with a fascinating history. From the first appearance of King George VI on Canadian coins in 1937 through to 1947, the Latin motto around the portrait of the King read Georgivs VI D:G: Rex et Ind: Imp:. This translates to "George VI, By the Grace of God (Dei Gratia), King and Emperor of India." However, when India gained independence from Britain on August 15, 1947, the title of the king needed to be changed. While the original design coins could be continued until the end of 1947, new dies with a changed motto were still not ready in early 1948. With a need for coinage for circulation, the Royal Canadian Mint decided to continue to issue 1947 coinage into early 1948, showing the new issue with a maple leaf added after the date. By the fall of 1948, new 1948 coinage went into production with the modified motto Georgivs VI Dei Gratia Rex ("George VI, By the Grace of God King"). The original mintage of the 1947 maple leaf silver dollar was 21,135, which is just 2,355 more coins than the ultra-rare key-date 1948 silver dollar.
