Tanks were important weapons in World War II, and though they were the subject of widespread research in the inter-war years, production was limited to relatively small numbers in a few countries. However, during World War II most armies employed tanks and production levels reached thousands each month. Tank usage, doctrine and production varied widely among the combatant nations. By war's end, a consensus was emerging regarding tank doctrine and design.

This five-piece one-ounce silver coin set depicts each of the following: the Soviet T-34 Medium Tank, the US M4 Sherman Medium Tank, the German PzKpfw V1 Tiger 1 Heavy Battle Tank, the British A22 Churchill Infantry Tank 3, and the Japanese Type 97 Chi-Ha Medium Tank. The design is struck in frosted relief contrasted by a coloured background which highlights the national emblem of its country of origin. The reverse of each coin depicts a detailed image of a WWII tank. The Perth Mint's "P" mintmark is also featured on the reverse of each coin.
