Brass Spade Guinea and Half-Guinea Gaming Token, 1788–1797

This original historic gaming token in near-uncirculated condition will take you back to Great Britain during the early 1800s when these tokens or "jetons" were widely used in for gambling like casino chips are used today. The design and appearance was intended to look like the British gold spade design half-guinea coins of the late 1700s, and dates on the pieces range from 1788 to 1797. The reference to "the good old days" refers to the era when the spade guineas were first issued.

In the late 18th century and early 19th century, gambling clubs were very fashionable and popular. This led to a substantial production of gaming tokens such as this piece. The spade guinea or half-guinea design was the most popular of the types used in gambling clubs of the era. The word jeton comes from the French word jeter meaning to throw, as one would throw one's chips onto a roulette table.

• Obverse: portrait of King George III: Georgius III Dei Gratia (reign: 1760–1820)
• Reverse: crowned spade-shaped shield in imitation of a George III half-guinea, with the inscription "In Memory of the Good Old Days"
