This extremely large, ultra-high-relief, one-kilogram fine-silver coin will transport you back to the Scandinavian Viking Age. The artwork comes to life through a combination of intricate detail, an impressive 100-mm diameter, and the use of multi-layer minting technology used to create extreme three-dimensional relief. An antique finish completes the imagery, linking the coin design with its historic representation. The main foreground element presents a muscular viking wearing a helmet and carrying an axe. Behind him is a viking shield in the centre, surrounded by ships and battle scenes. The obverse portrays the coat-of-arms of Samoa together with the date, weight and silver fineness of the coin. The coin is dated 2023 and is legal tender in Samoa with a $25 nominal face value.
Vikings were seafaring people originally from Scandinavia (present-day Denmark, Norway and Sweden), who from the late eighth to the late 11th centuries raided, pirated, traded and settled throughout parts of Europe. Around 1000 AD, Norse explorer Lief Erikson is thought to have founded a Viking settlement on the coast of what is now Newfoundland.
