Peter McKinnon is one of the most recognized and renowned photographers of our time. The image seen in the first coin has been described by McKinnon as his ultimate "bucket shot" and is the subject of a short film viewed by more than a million people.
Coin 1: 2019 $30 Moraine Lake Pure Silver
This is McKinnon's ultimate bucket shot, capturing the natural beauty of Moraine Lake. This glacially fed lake is located in the Valley of the Ten Peaks in Banff National Park, Alberta. Moraine Lake is found 14 kilometres outside the Village of Lake Louise. Its brilliant blue-green colour is a result of light refracting off the rock flour (fine particles of rock) in the glacier run-off which flows into the lake. At an elevation of 1,885 metres, the lake does not begin to melt until June. The water level and its vibrant colour peak in late June.
Coin 2: 2019 $30 Mount Rundle Pure Silver (release date July 2019)
Mount Rundle is located between Canmore and Banff in Banff National Park, Alberta. McKinnon's original photograph on the reverse side of this coin is designed to give the impression of looking through a camera lens at the imposing mountain reflected in the Vermilion Lakes. Mount Rundle is a prominent wedge-shaped peak immediately south of the town of Banff, with lofty views over the Bow Valley in Banff National Park, Alberta. It's one of the most popular climbs in the Canadian Rockies, with the summit bid beginning in Banff at parking adjacent to the golf course past Bow Falls in Banff National Park.
