Product Overview
2021 is an exceptional year for the rarely seen half-dollar denomination. This set of two mint rolls each containing 25 brilliant uncirculated 50-cent coins features two distinctly different designs. The first roll includes regular-design coins with the current coat-of-arms of Canada. A second low-mintage special-edition roll features the original coat-of-arms of Canada first officially adopted 100 years ago in 1921 together with the image of King George VI as he appeared on Canada's first half-dollar with this design back in 1937.
2021 50-Cent Special Wrap Circulation Roll
Canada's coat of arms was proclaimed by King George V in 1921, as a representation of Canada and its political roots—especially its ties to Great Britain and France. The design features images from France (the fleur-de-lis), England (the three royal lions and rose), Scotland (royal Scottish lion and thistle) and Ireland (the royal Irish harp of Tara and shamrock). In 1957, the Tudor Crown originally featured in the coat of arms was replaced by Saint Edward's crown because it represents all of Britain's monarchs, rather than only those of one ruling family. It was modified again in 1994 so that the motto of the Order of Canada, Desiderantes meliorem patriam (Latin for "They desire a better country"), could be added.
2021 Limited-Edition Special Wrap: 100th Anniversary of Canada's Coat of Arms
A throwback to the original coat-of-arms coin design, each roll contains 25 modern reproductions of the very first coin to feature our nation's coat of arms: the 50-cent coin issued in 1937. With a historic effigy on the obverse and an early version of the coat of arms on the reverse, each coin in this special wrap roll represents history.
