2014 $250 Pure One Kilogram Silver Coin - In the Eyes of the Snowy Owl

When the owl first appeared on the coinage of ancient Athens more than 2500 years ago, it quickly became the most popular and best recognized symbol of good quality silver coinage. For 2014, the Royal Canadian Mint has revived the classic owl symbol with a new striking appearance, a huge one kilogram size, a proof finish accentuated by coloured elements, and an extremely low mintage of just 500 pieces.

With a diameter of more than 10 centimetres, and a thickness of nearly one and a half centimetres, the size and weight of the coin is impressive.  The coin is aptly called "In the Eyes of the Snowy Owl". The intense gaze of the yellow and black enameled eyes brings this coin life. The Royal Canadian Mint has combined exceptional artistry, intrinsic pure silver value, and an extremely low mintage to create a collectable worthy of a true heirloom coin collection.

This coin is the first in a 3 coin annual series featuring the striking eyes of Canadian wildlife.  

The coin is double struck with a frosted cameo finish set against a mirror background field. This is the highest quality finish produced by the Royal Canadian Mint. The total mintage is limited to just 500 pieces.
