Product Overview
Superman is the superhero alter-ego of Clark Kent, and widely considered a cultural icon. Superman first appeared in Action Comics #1 (June 1938) and since has appeared in various television programs, films, newspaper strips, and video games. Superman can usually be found wearing a blue costume and red cape, with a stylized red-and-yellow "S" shield on his chest. This shield has been used extensively to symbolize the character.

Superman was born on the planet Krypton, before being rocketed to Earth as an infant by his biological father, just before Krypton was destroyed. Found and adopted by a Kansas farmer and his wife, the child is raised as Clark Kent, and taught strong moral values. Very early in his childhood, Clark began to display his superhuman abilities, which he eventually resolved to use for the greater good. As Clark Kent, he is a journalist for the Daily Planet, a newspaper based in the fictional city of Metropolis. Superman's primary love interest is Lois Lane, and his archenemy is supervillain and millionaire Lex Luthor. Superman has captured our imaginations, and has fascinated cultural theorists, commentators and critics worldwide. Superman has been hailed as the foundation for our contemporary understanding of superheroes!

The image on this coin was taken from the cover of Adventures of Superman #596, and features the most iconic symbol of Superman's power: the famous S-shield.
