$20 Fine Silver Coin Murano Glass Candy Cane

This 2013 $20 one-ounce pure silver coin is both a limited-edition collectible and a beautiful work of art. The design captures the spirit of the holiday season, featuring a miniature sculpture of a red, green and white candy cane made of translucent Murano glass. The candy cane occupies the bottom-left area of the coin, sitting against a colourful and festive image of holiday tree ornaments and vibrant poinsettias. The Venetian glass was hand-crafted for the Royal Canadian Mint by master glassmakers Cortella and Ballarin in Murano, Italy.

Murano glass dates to eighth century Rome. At the time, glass was a luxury reserved strictly for the rich, and glassmakers enjoyed an aristocratic status.  Each Murano glass element has been hand crafted by master artisans in Murano, Italy, combining rich traditions of the past with the modern workmanship of the Royal Canadian Mint. And because the Murano glass candy cane has been fashioned by hand, each coin is unique!
