$20 Fine Silver Coin Regal Red-Tailed Hawk

This $20 fine silver coin features the iconic red-tailed hawk. The coin is double-struck with a proof finish, and contains just over one ounce of fine silver. It is engraved with the year "2016," and the face value of "20 dollars."

The design by Canadian artist Emily Damstra features the red-tailed hawk in its natural setting. This large bird is viewed from the perspective of its prey. The hawk is diving with outstretched wings, a fixed gaze and talons ready. Engraving recreates details in the features, while selective colour captures the reddish-brown, cream, yellow and brown-spotted patterning of this fierce, determined bird.

The red-tailed hawk is a top predator, using tall perches to spot their prey, and they also hunt from the air. As they circle, they can spot a mouse from 30 metres, then they swoop down and grab their prey in their talons. Male and female red-tailed hawks look alike, with a length of about 45 cm to 65 cm and a wingspan of about 114 cm to 133 cm, and they can weigh from 690 grams to 1460 grams.
