Product Overview
The era of 1939 to 1945 will always be remembered as the era of the Second World War, and the coinage of Canada from this turbulent time serves as a lasting testament to the perseverance and sacrifices made by Canadian soldiers and others to build the future that we now live in.

Adolph Hitler and Joseph Stalin signed the German-Soviet Nonaggression Pact in late August 1939 which incited a frenzy of worry in London and Paris. Hitler had long planned an invasion of Poland, a nation to which Great Britain and France had guaranteed military support if it was attacked by Germany.

The pact with Stalin meant that Hitler would not face a war on two fronts once he invaded Poland, and would have Soviet assistance in conquering and dividing the nation itself. On September 1, 1939, Hitler invaded Poland from the west; two days later, France and Britain declared war on Germany, beginning World War II.

This eight-piece collection includes high-quality original examples of the coin denominations and types issued during the war, all dated 1939 to 1945 and presented in a high-quality glass-top mahogany-finish case.

While the silver half-dollar, silver quarter, silver dime and cent are the familiar designs used before and after the war, the need for nickel in the war effort resulted in significant changes to the five-cent denomination. Four different five-cent coins are included dated from 1942 to 1945.

Silver 50-Cent

Silver 25-Cent

Silver 10-Cent

Original War Issue Five-Cent Coins 1942, 1943, 1944 and 1945
This collection includes a complete set of war-issue nickels dated 1942, 1943, 1944 and 1945. The 1942 and 1943 five-cent coins are made of a brass alloy called tombac since nickel was needed for war materials, while the 1944 and 1945 issues use a chrome-plated steel alloy.

The 1942 issue maintains the familiar beaver design, but this is replaced in the 1943, 1944 and 1945 issues, with a new design that incorporates Winston Churchill's V for Victory, and an international code message circling the rim: "We Win When We Work Willingly."

One-Cent
