Product Overview
This one-ounce fine gold coin re-creates the ultra-rare 1936 dime with the dot at the bottom below the maple bough. Some of the rarest classic coins of Canada were created in early 1937 following the untimely death of King George V. With a need for coins for circulation and little time to prepare new dies, 1936-dated one-cent, 10-cent and 25-cent coins were produced with a small dot to indicate they were produced after the marked date. While a significant number of the 1936 dot variety 25-cent coins were released for circulation, only a few specimen examples of cent and dime survive. The 1936 dot variety dime is now considered one of the classic ultra rarities of Canadian numismatics, with only six surviving coins known. While not quite as elusive, this new fine gold version will also be a scarce collectible with a mintage of just 550 pieces.
While the reverse is faithful re-creation of the 1936 original coin, the obverse features the 2021 year of issue together with the historic effigy of King George V by Sir E. B. Mackennal.
Exclusive Bonus Coin: Original 1936 Silver Dime
While this original 1936 coin does not include the dot under the maple bough, it serves as a perfect comparison companion to the gold dime and represents the final year of issue both for King George V and for the maple wreath design on Canadian coinage. According to mint records, a total of 191,237 dot 10-cent coins were originally produced, but almost all of these were melted down and not issued. One of the rare surviving specimens resides in the National Currency Collection as part of a 1937 specimen set that includes all three dot coins (it is the only set of its kind that is still intact).
