Product Overview
This fine silver double-struck proof $3 coin features a surprisingly lifelike image of a spider and its web which seem to sit on the surface of the coin. The orb-weaver spider is presented as one of the great animal architects living in Canada. The spider is poised on its web, displaying its light and dark markings on its back, body and legs. The reverse also includes the word "Canada," the denomination, and the date.
The orb weaver spider can create eight different types of silks, each having its own properties. It can produce multiple threads at once, weaving them with its spinnerets (small organs on the underside of a spider's abdomen). The tensile strength of the spider's silk can be compared to that of Kevlar and steel. Although scientists have performed experiments to extract silk for the purpose of weaving textiles, they have yet to be successful in replicating this powerful material.
