Product Overview
This is an attractive premium-quality bronze coin issued by the Roman Emperor Valentinian I from 364 to 375 CE. It would have been recognized and readily accepted by Roman citizens who used it on a daily basis over 1,700 years ago. On the front of the coin is the likeness of the Emperor Valentinian I; on the back is one of the various gods and goddesses of the Roman pantheon.

Valentinian I
Flavius Valentinianus was born around 321 in Pannonia. He rose through the military to high rank under Julian and Jovian, and after their deaths was chosen Augustus. He appointed his brother Valens as co-emperor in the east, and spent a lot of time defending the Rhine frontier. Valentinian also faced severe revolts in Britain, which he sent Theodosius to suppress. He rebuilt and improved the fortifications along the frontiers, even building fortresses in enemy territory. Late in 375, Valentinian received a deputation of barbarians and grew enraged. The attitude of the messengers so enraged Valentinian that he suffered a stroke while angrily yelling at them, provoking his death on November 17, 375.
