Product Overview
This original United States Liberty Head $2.50 gold coin is dated from 1840 to 1907, and is a premium-quality example of the coinage which fuelled the expansion of American commerce and industry. Coins like this circulated widely through the United States until 1933 when, in the depths of the Great Depression and financial crisis, president Franklin D. Roosevelt signed an executive order which made private gold ownership illegal. Only in late 1974 was lawful private ownership of gold restored. While many coins like this were redeemed in 1933 and were melted down by the government, some coins have survived to today and have become both fascinating collectibles and time capsules of an era gone by.

From the mid 1800s to the early 20th century, gold played a key role in commerce in the United States. While higher-value transactions were made in both banknotes and gold, all the banknotes were redeemable for gold, and the precious metal coins represented the "real money" of the era. Gold coins circulated in denominations of $1 (until 1889), $2.50, $5, $10, and $20.

The obverse of this $2.50 gold coin features a left-facing Liberty portrait, pictured wearing a coronet displaying the word "liberty"; her hair is curled up at the back in a loose knot decorated with a string of beads, though some strands of hair have escaped. Below the truncation of the portrait is the year of issue. Inside the denticled rim are 13 stars denoting the original colonies of the United States, while the edge is reeded.

The reverse design shows a majestic-looking eagle, facing left with its wings displayed, almost stretching to the rim of the coin. In front of the eagle's breast is a union shield. The eagle clutches arrows and an olive branch in its talons, representing America's military might and commitment to peace. The wording "United States of America" surrounds much of the design, separated only by the eagle's wing tips and leaving just enough room for the value of "2 1/2 D."
