The Tradition of the “Lucky Loonie”
The Lucky Loonie tradition dates back to 2002. Just before those Winter Olympic Games began, a Canadian loon dollar was buried at centre ice of the Salt Lake City hockey arena for luck for the Canadian teams. Both the men’s and women’s teams went on to bring home gold, and the loon dollar became a symbol of luck for Canadian achievement. Since then, the Royal Canadian Mint has produced special issue Lucky Loonie coins to coincide with each set of Olympic Games.
