Cartier was founded in 1847 in Paris by the jeweller Louis-François Cartier, who in 1899 handed it over to his three sons and the company remained under family control until 1964. They would establish the company internationally, not least by making the Cartier name a favorite among the crowned heads of Europe. King Edward VII of Great Britain referred to Cartier as "the jeweller of kings and the king of jewellers." Cartier International is a French luxury goods conglomerate that designs, manufactures, distributes, and sells jewellery and watches.
