Product Overview
Canada's 2023 pure silver proof set is highly sought-after not only as the highest-quality annual coin collection, but also as the final issue to feature the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II. Since the new King Charles III dies were not ready at the time of issue, the Royal Canadian Mint decided to issue this set with a posthumous effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, with an added double date of 1952–2022, marking her reign. Interestingly, the Royal Canadian Mint has stated that it will not be issuing 2023 circulation coins with Queen Elizabeth on them, but will be waiting to issue circulation coins featuring King Charles III. This makes every Queen Elizabeth coin in this set much more interesting and collectible.
The seven-piece collection includes regular design coins from the cent to the two-dollar coin, except that each coin is struck in pure silver with a near-flawless proof finish, and with the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II. The set also includes a half-dollar coin and a special-issue silver dollar featuring Kathleen "Kit" Coleman, an historically significant pioneer journalist. The silver dollar and the two-dollar coin also feature selective gold plating over fine silver, while the loon dollar coin features full gold plating over fine silver. The set comes presented in a high-quality genuine leather folio book, and continues the long tradition of annual Royal Canadian Mint proof sets started in 1971. This set is the ultimate annual coin collection, providing an exceptional opportunity to mark a moment in time or to present as a prestige gift to mark an important event in 2023.
Silver Dollar Design
Kit Coleman was one of Canada's most successful early presswomen. A pioneer of Canadian journalism, Coleman made history by becoming North America's first accredited woman war correspondent. She also helped establish the Canadian Women's Press Club in 1904 and served as its first president, and later became Canada's first syndicated woman columnist.
The innovative and artistic design on this coin features a silhouette collage that captures key moments in Coleman's life, including the ship that brought her to Canada, the office of the Toronto newspapers that published her columns from 1889 to 1911, and a typewriter that symbolizes her impact on Canadian journalism.
