Product Overview
This original ancient Greek bronze coin is more than 2,350 years old and dates from the reign of King Philip II of Macedon, father of Alexander the Great. This is a superb-quality coin in exceptional about as-struck uncirculated condition, with sharp, clear detail. The coin comes with a certificate of authenticity and an information page.

The front design of the coin bears an image of Apollo, son of Zeus and recognized as a god of music, truth and prophecy, healing, the sun and light, plague, poetry and more. The back design of the coin features a horse and rider; horseracing was one of Philip's favourite sports and part of the original Olympic Games.

Philip II was a historically significant king bringing about major changes to ancient Greece. Philip used both military and diplomatic means to gain domination over all of Greece, and laid the foundation for his son, Alexander III the Great, to expand Greek domination of the civilized world.

His military skills brought him early success, and it was not until his armies were opposed by Athens in 352 BCE that he faced any type of resistance. He intervened effectively in the war between Thebes and Phocis, and after gaining success in battles he led the League of Corith, using the military force in his war against Persia. Two years later, in 336 BCE, Philip II was assassinated by one of his bodyguards.
