Product Overview

This silver half-drachm (hemidrachm) dates from 772–793 AD, and is one of the very best coins of a small hoard recently discovered. Although it is more than 1,200 years old, the coin is in original as-struck uncirculated condition. Due to the minting technology of the era, the design of this coin is crude but has survived in virtually new condition as originally produced.

The coin comes from an area known as Tabaristan, a region in northern Persia on the south coast of the Caspian Sea. Although the area was ruled by a number of different governors during this time, coins with this style introduced more than 100 years earlier continued to be used, including the image of an anonymous king. The back design features two attendants flanking a fire alter. These coins would have been used throughout the Middle East and Europe.
